It is no secret that mental illness is not a favorite topic of discussion amongst most people. It is a topic that has for a long time, been hush hush in families, schools and in the community. As a result of this, there is a lot of misunderstanding about mental illness. This misunderstanding creates a stigma, which prohibits people from getting the treatment they need to live happy, healthy and productive lives. Fear of being labeled has left people feeling alone and suffering when they otherwise would live happily under the proper treatment.
There are some basic steps to reducing the stigma of mental illness listed here:
- Recognize the person before the disability. Do not say things like "autistic boy", "schizophrenic girl". Rather say, "boy with autism" or "girl with schizophrenia".
- Do not use derogatory labels such as "psycho" or "crazy". Rather treat those with mental illness with the respect and dignity they deserve.
- Educate yourself as much as possible about mental illness and the myths vs. the facts
- Be a friend or support system for someone who may be going through an emotional challenge.
- Encourage that they call someone for help and be there for them if they need you.
- Take time to educate others. Don't allow the myths and labels to spread. Share the facts and this website with everyone you know.
